I noticed it's been awhile since my last journal so I figured, "why not?" I may not hold interest or concern often for these entries but I dig writing them on occasion, and well, tonight's sort of one of them
Lately as a number of you have noticed, I have been submitt'n work like crazy compared to my usual level of activity on Deviant Art. It's one among my efforts in actually winning that dream career out there.
I would typically go and babble endlessly almost about the work I've been at lately but I'll spare my Watchers out there, I do enough of just that with my submissions alone anyway. Today, how about discussing movies?
I recently watched Green Lantern with my wife, and while the film had its fun and clever moments, I was quite honestly disappointed with it.
Really, from what I've seen, read, and heard many were, which is sad for me cus after taking a friend's advise years ago and actually reading the Sinestro Corp Wars and most if not everything onwards to Blackest Night and Brightest Day I've really learned to like the Green Lantern.
On the positive side of the movie, the suits were impressive; I liked that glowing, organic touch they put on the Lanterns' uniforms. The special effects, yes, they had times where they either got really old or just really poor compared to what their budget would've or may have implied, but they got pretty good here and there. The comical moments, naturally you know, some good some bad, the works.
Some'd complain about the cast members, but I never really had any issue with any of them.
As for the negative side of things here: The F'n Story I have to say! Their villain of choice was Parallax, the ghostly/demonic embodiment of fear itself, and while I am sort of a fan of this villain(comic-wise), I personally felt he was too early(and really too poorly) a choice yet. In the comics he wasn't even supposed to arrive until what, the 90's? And how long have they been publishing the GL Comics anyway? This was like making the Amazing Spider-Man movie and throwing in Carnage before the Goblin or something! Sinestro was the one I had figured AND Hoped would be the villain during when I heard the movie was still in progress, given his story alone, and really, I felt it would've meant more possibilities and opportunities for character development, 3 dimensional characters altogether even, which plenty would likely concur more and more movies are lacking a lot of just that anymore. Besides, Parallax is supposed to be Extremely Powerful! SICK Powerful compared to the likes of a new GL Recruit who through out the whole movie gets VERY little training! Yet in the end, that's all it ironically takes to defeat him, while you notice in the movie a handful of more experienced lanterns(Sinestro included!) challenge him just to get slaughtered(Save for of course Sinestro), it was just stupid!
And beyond villainy/story approaches, that was exactly another problem: the characters.
All the other GLs DC fans are familiar with, such as Kilowog to name but one, you only see all of those guys for what had to have been a grand total of a mere 10 to 20 minutes! WTF? And that goes for the planet Oa, too! And Hal Jordan's training, three! And though this is perhaps a poor choice for four, Hal's short period of time before actually getting used to his powers enough to conjure up complex shapes and machinery(Such as flamethrowers, gatling guns, chainsaws, etc)
That was another thing, I remember it being said in the comics that for every usage of the ring, it drains you as well as its own energy, or something like that, cus Green Arrow used it and it had actually exhausted him just to shape an arrow for a friend's life. I felt that would've been interesting to see you know, ALL of that!: Hal's training, his adaptation to the ring, get'n to know the other Lanterns, All of that could've and would've been interesting as can be and they just dumped it.
But, I've rambled enough on this particular subject so I'll go ahead and conclude by saying simply you know, "Poorly Scripted Story, poorly picked bad guy, 4/10 at Best! Nuf Said!"
Peace Out, Gotta Get Some Sleep.
